Ten lessons learned from ten years as an MD in London’s property market

This year is our company’s tenth birthday so what better time to write a list of what we’ve learned in the last decade.

1. Treat your colleagues with respect

And they will treat your business, and most importantly, your customers with the same respect. The opposite is also true.

2. The customer is always right.

Having carried out nearly 100,000 inventories, cleans and maintenance jobs I am yet to experience anything that has convinced me any differently

3. Friendliness is the world’s most underrated quality.

People like to deal with people they like. Be friendly, smile, help people out and you will be repaid in spades

4. The London property market is chock full of top notch talent.

The standard of work being done by most of London’s top agents is exceptional with highly trained and motivated people keeping the wheels of the capital’s property machine moving.

5.  Who you are is more important than what you do.

Company culture is such a strong driving factor in the success or lack of success in any given company. We have worked hard to find people who buy into our values – hard-working, friendly, solution-driven people who put the client first.

6. Trust is the most valuable commodity in business.

We have managed to build up fantastic relationships with over 150 Letting Agents in London who trust us to deliver great service again and again. That can only be done through consistently delivering high-quality work week after week, month after month and year after year.

7. You don’t always need to reinvent the wheel.

There were plenty of property services companies when we started but ten years later we are London’s market leader because we have been ruthless in our aim to deliver much better customer service than anyone else.

8. Innovate.

Believe it or not, when we first started we found our way around London using paper A-Z books. Those days are long gone and nowadays there is an app for everything. Relatively early into our journey, we decided to invest heavily into our own software and app system. Lateral (as we call it) has become a hugely powerful and reliable tool for us and serves as a major point of difference between us and the competition

9. You can be successful and still be ethical.

Since Joel and I started the company we have put ethics at the forefront of what we do. If we make mistakes we rectify them whatever the cost.

10.  London is a phenomenal city.

We are proud of our claim that we are London’s Property Services company. We cover everywhere inside the M25 and we all just love this crazy, vibrant, diverse, noisy, and fun place we all call home.
